OpenAI Is Talking to the Right People About AI and Mental Health. Now We Need to See What Happens Next.
Last week, OpenAI did something that doesn’t make for a flashy product launch but might matter more than most of their recent announcements. They brought together leaders from across the U.S. mental health community, in partnership with the American Psychological Association (APA), to explore how AI is shaping the mental health experiences of young people.
The convening included members of the CEO Alliance for Mental Health, a coalition of the biggest names in U.S. mental health advocacy and policy: NAMI, the National Council for Mental Wellbeing, the Kennedy Forum, Meadows Mental Health Policy Institute, the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, the American Psychiatric Association, and several others. Critically, young people from Brotherhood Crusade and Hidden Genius Project were also in the room, grounding the conversation in lived experience rather than just clinical theory.
The stated focus? Listen first. To young people. To researchers and clinicians. To those working on the frontlines of care.
Why This Matters
Let’s be honest: you could read this announcement cynically. OpenAI has been under enormous pressure. State attorneys general across the U.S. have written to AI companies warning them to fix problematic outputs or face legal consequences. The APA has testified before the U.S. Senate calling for immediate regulatory guardrails. Research from Common Sense Media and Stanford found that leading chatbots consistently fail to recognise common mental health conditions in young people and can actually delay help-seeking behaviour. And the World Health Organisation convened its own expert workshop in March 2026 warning about the risks of untested AI being used for emotional support.
So yes, there’s a PR element here. OpenAI needed to be seen engaging with the mental health establishment, not operating in a silo.
But here’s the thing: that doesn’t make it meaningless.
The Biggest Player Has to Lead
OpenAI is the household name. When something goes wrong with an AI chatbot and a young person, the headline almost always says “ChatGPT” regardless of which platform was actually involved. Character.AI, Replika, and dozens of smaller companion chatbot providers have arguably had worse safety track records, but they rarely face the same level of scrutiny because most people outside of tech circles have never heard of them.
That’s the burden of being the biggest. But it also creates an opportunity.
When OpenAI sets a visible standard, whether through their Expert Council on Well-Being and AI, their $2 million mental health research grant programme, their Global Physician Network of 90+ clinicians, or convenings like this one, it creates a benchmark. Other providers get measured against it. Regulators reference it. And the organisations in the room, the NAMIs and APAs of the world, gain leverage to hold the entire industry accountable, not just one company.
If OpenAI raises the bar, others have to clear it too. That’s worth something, even if the initial motivation is partly about managing reputation.
What I’d Like to See Next
The announcement talks about “starting points” and “continued collaboration.” That’s fine for now, but the real test will be what comes out of it in the next 6 to 12 months. Specifically:
- Published findings or recommendations from the convening, not just a press release
- Concrete changes to model behaviour around young people and mental health, with transparent reporting on how those changes perform
- The voices of those young people from Brotherhood Crusade and Hidden Genius carried forward into ongoing design and policy decisions, not just invited to one event as a signal
- Cross-industry adoption of whatever standards or frameworks emerge, extending beyond OpenAI’s own products
The CEO Alliance for Mental Health published a vision statement in January 2026 committing to evidence-based AI innovation, ethical safeguards, and health equity. That’s the kind of framework that needs teeth, and convenings like this are how you start building them.
The Practitioner’s Take
From where I sit, training businesses and individuals to use AI effectively and responsibly, this is exactly the kind of work that should be happening. AI is already part of how young people seek information, connection, and help. That isn’t going to change. The question is whether the tools meet them with appropriate safeguards or whether we continue to play catch-up after things go wrong.
I’ve said it before and I’ll keep saying it: AI is a communication skill, a delegation skill, a life skill. And like any life skill, the environment it operates in needs to be safe, especially for the most vulnerable users. OpenAI taking that seriously, even imperfectly, is better than the alternative.
